One of the things that I always communicate to business owners is the need for genuine connection with their employees. Oftentimes, no matter how much you lecture to them, you will not get the desired response. This is because, at the bottomline is the need for validation that you genuinely care for them for them first and foremost.

I had a client who treated her employees to an art party for her birthday. Her employees instantly put their guards down as they enjoyed the activities like a child. As expected, some would occasionally step out to finish task. But they all said that they were very thankful because they felt rejuvinated.

One thing that the activities always prove is that it doesn't take much to make employees happy. Sometimes, no amount of material compensation can match genuine sense of belongingness.
